Dr. Simsekler is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering at Khalifa University of Science & Technology, Abu Dhabi; and an Honorary Research Associate at the University College London (UCL) School of Management, London. In addition, he is a Visiting Scholar at Boston Children’s Hospital (Teaching Hospital of Harvard Medical School), and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
Dr. Simsekler obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 2015. During his PhD, he was a visiting researcher in the Center for Medical Innovation System at the University of Tokyo in Summer 2012, and in the Center for Patient Safety and Quality Research at Boston Children’s Hospital in Summer 2014. After completing his PhD, he worked as a Research Associate at the UCL School of Management for about two years.
Dr. Simsekler’s research focuses on healthcare operations management, risk management, patient safety and quality improvement. He is mainly interested in investigating the impact of healthcare process design on efficiency, safety and quality. Leveraging principles from operations management and systems thinking, he particularly examines operational failures and safety risks to drive transformational system improvement and innovation in healthcare.
He teaches courses on industrial and systems engineering: He has taught the following courses as a principal instructor or teaching fellow: Healthcare Operations Management (Khalifa University), Product, Technology & Operations Management (UCL and Khalifa University); Strategy by Design (UCL), Drawing (Cambridge), Introduction to Industrial & Systems Engineering (KUST), Modern Methods of Manufacturing (Khalifa University) and Engineering Economic Analysis (Khalifa University).
He is a member of the following prefessional institutes:
- Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS)
- Academy of Management (AOM)
- The Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society (MSOM)
- Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE)
